5 Inspirational Quotes to Help You Navigate a Career Change

5 Inspirational Quotes to Help You Navigate a Career Change Changing careers involves a lot of adjusting. You may feel alittle lost along the way. You might even have moments when you think itd be better to throw in the towel.Dont give up Dig deep for motivation, never forget why you started this journey, and keep goinguntil youve accomplished what you set out to do.When I need motivation, I like to collect inspirational quotesI can refer back to when I feel my drive start to wane. Here are five of my favorites maybe they can help you, too1. It Takes as Much Energy to Wish as It Does to Plan. (Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady of the United States)You cant just sit at a job you hate, daydreaming about a different job, and then go home to daydream some more. You actually have to dosomething if you want to get that different job.Make a plan. It doesnt have to cover your career change from A to Z it just needs to entail some kind of action you will take in the real world. Then, once youveaccomplished that plan, start the next one.The key is to keep moving. Instead of getting bogged down in endless fantasizing, be energized by the momentum you build bit by bit as you navigate through the process. If youve actually done something to make your career change a reality, youre already ahead of the curve. Most people just accept that their work is a drudge and get on with it day in, day out.2. Whenever You Become Empowered, You Will Be Tested.(Caroline Myss, Author)Atremendous rush of excitement comes over someone when they decide to dedicate their time and energy to pursuing their true passion. However, things will get tough along the way. You may have to give up personal time to do some training or gain experience. Youll probably be pressed during interviews about why youre making this change now. Your family or friends may think youre making a mistake and withhold their support. All those things are tests of your sense of empowerment. Youv eallowed yourself to want more out of your work. That makes you different from most people, and you will meet resistance because of that. Some of that resistance will be positive, as when hiring managers want to make aya youre clear about what you want. Some of theresistance will just be envy and cynicism. Its up to you to hold onto your sense of empowerment through it all.3. Dont Stand in the Corner Waiting for the Chance / Make Your Own Music, Start Your Own Dance.(Madonna, the Undisputed Queen of Pop)Lifted from an infectious but mostly forgotten tune called Spotlight, these are lyrics to live by. Madonnas material is full of positivity, drive, and ambition no surprise, considering shes still a force to be reckoned with more than three decades into her career.Whenever you feellike giving in to doubt whenever youre ready to throw your hands up and say, I guess it just wasnt meant to be resist it. Go back to that place of self-discovery where you first decided to embark on this new adventure. Recalibrate and try a different path. Whatever you do, dont just stand around hoping for opportunities to come. Put on your favorite 80s beats, roll up your sleeves, and get back out there.4. We Must Be Willing to Let Go of the Life We Planned so as to Have the LifeThat Is Waiting for Us.(Joseph Campbell, Author andProfessor of Comparative Mythology)It takes guts to try something new, especially in your career. Fear of failure or, even worse, obsessing over the correct way forwardcan lead to inertia. When a change is important to you, you may want to control everything, lest you make a mistake that could jeopardize your success. However, one of the most important components of a successful career change is the willingness to get lostand explore. Dont be afraid to backtrack and start again. Approach every opportunity with a fresh perspective. Let go of your anxiety about not knowing what youre doing and just do it. You cannot reach a new destination by walking someone el ses path.5. You Dont Get What You Wish for. You Dont Even Get What You Hope for. You Get What You Believe.(Oprah Winfrey, Entrepreneur, Philanthropist, and Talk Show Host)Anyone who has ever achieved anything will tell you about the importance of knowing they wouldmake it in the end. There are plenty of quotesthat refer to this principle, but none sums it up better thanOprahs triple-punch reality check about the difference between wanting, hoping, and believing.Psychologists tell us our chances of making it in a life-or-death situation go up or down according to what were thinking. In other words, if you anticipate youll make it, you have abetter chance of making it. If belief can help save your life, imagine what it can do for your career change No matter how many stumbling blocks you come across, know in your gut that success is already yours. You just havent arrived yet.Rui Betencourt is the editor ofRuibetencourt.com. Follow him onLinkedInandTwitter.

3 Things You Should Never Do During a Video Interview

3 Things You Should Never Do During a Video Interview3 Things You Should Never Do During a Video InterviewAs technology continues to infiltrate every pocket of the workplace, video einstellungsgesprchs are becoming increasingly common. Research shows that over 60%of recruiters and hiring managers opt to use video interviewing, and Talentnowreported in 2018 that this trend is expected to continue intensifying. Why are video interviews so hot? A big reason is that they help employers save time and money on the job search process. Workforcereported that online interviews can help companies cut spending from as much as $10,000 per search down to around $500. One survey found that nearly halfof companies use video interviewing to shorten the time to hire. Employers also find video a convenient way to reach candidates from outside their local area. Live videos can additionally be highly effective for employers when it comes to information gathering. Research has found that live video interv iews are six timesfaster than phone interviews, and represent the information equivalent of a 200-question written candidate assessment. With this growth in the popularity of video interviews, however, comes a corresponding need for applicants to master this type of media. Flying blind into a video interview is a setup for failing this part of your job search. The fact is, while you do want to approach a video interview with the same level of seriousness as an in-person meeting with the hiring team, there are some specific things to know about video interviews- before youre on camera. The most important points to be aware of are what to avoiddoing in relation to your video interview. Here are three things you should never do during a video interviewDont be too casual. Some candidates may assume that if a company has a casual corporate culture, they can treat their interview performance in kind. Younger candidates (millennial and gen Z in particular) may be tempted to take a mora casual approach to the interview process, which wont fly well with all hiring managers- particularly those from gen X and older who grew up with different standards about interview formalities. While some industries may be open to a more laid-back approach than others, it isnt a good gamble for candidates to take. Instead, recognize that your interviewer is forming a professional judgment and opinion of you based on the look and behavior that you present on-screen. If you wouldnt chew gum in an in-person interview, dont do it on video.Take your setting into account. An interview at the companys offices gives you one less thing to worry about- the interview environment. Face-to-face interviews generally mean that everyone enjoys a professional conference room or office-based setting, and candidates dont have to sweat where that will be. But for video interviews, figuring out where youll conduct the interview becomes of paramount importance. The employer will see two things during the intervie w- you, and the background behind you. Therefore, you need to ensure that your chosen video venue reflects a professional setting. A car wont cut it (especially not if youre driving), and neither will a messy bedroom with your personal effects in full view as a backdrop. If you dont have a clean desk area with neutral, plain walls behind you from which to conduct the call, then it may make sense to rent an office space for an hour or two to ensure the right environment for your video interview.Dont assume your technology will work.Perhaps the biggest faux pas that job applicants can make regarding video interviews is failing to test out their technology interface well in advanceof their scheduled screening. Different employers will conduct interviews on different video platforms, and this means knowing which one youll be required to use and downloading it onto your desktop or laptop before your interview.Candidates should then take it one step further, and test out the software/equi pment on their computer to be sure everything is working properly. Dont save this step until the half-hour before your call takes place, because if you donotice somethings wrong, youll need time to figure out how to fix it. Some common areas for troubleshooting the camera (be sure nothing is covering up the camera eye at the top of your monitor), and the microphone (do a test run with someone not involved in the interview to be sure others can hear you).Video interviews are becoming ubiquitous in the workplace, and need to be taken as seriously as in-person screenings. By understanding the unique donts in this arena and avoiding them at all costs, youll be better prepared to focus on impressing your interviewer.Check out our job interview tips category for more interview advice.

Body Language Hacks to Help Women Get Ahead at Work

Body Language Hacks to Help Women Get Ahead at WorkBody Language Hacks to Help Women Get Ahead at WorkIs your body talking louder than you are? And is it sending the messages you want it to send in your professional life? Nonverbal communication and paralanguage encompass every aspect of communication beyond your words. Its your facial expressions, your eye contact, your hand gestures, your posture, your tone, your touch, and even your environment. Collectively, they are the wordless signals that speak volumes, says Darlene Price, executive speech coach and author of Well Said. She estimates nonverbal communication can carry 65 percentto 93 percentmora impact than your actual spoken words. While that might sound intimidating, the beauty of nonverbal communication is that anyone can be good at it. Consider it a skill that can be developed, improved upon, and used strategically in the workplace- and one thats especially important for women to keep in mind. Certain gender differences in nonverbal cues can keep women from being taken seriously at work and ascending the corporate ladder, Price says. Want to make sure your nonverbal communication is helping you get ahead at work? Follow these strategies. Smile and Nod With a Purpose Did you know you have more than 10,000 different facial expressions? elend only do women use more of them, but theyre generally more able to identify, interpret, and evaluate the facial expressions of others, says Ben Sorensen, an executive coach at Optimum Associates. And some expressions carry different meanings for women than they do for men. Take smiling and nodding, for instance. The smile is a body language sign of appeasement, says Price. Its also a subordinate behavior, which is why the fact that women smile more than men is not necessarily a good thing. While being polite, approachable and likable is important, if youre overly smiley- especially in high-stakes moments or at times of contention- then people arent going to take you as seriously. Pair that smile with a head nod or tilt and you could be putting yourself at agreater disadvantage. When youre with a man, particularly in any type of negotiation, use the body strategically, says Price. No (head) tilt- thats subordinate. Keep your head straight as the mans usually is. Keep your face neutral and only nod and smile if and when theres a reason to. Maintain a Two-Second Gaze In a professional setting, eye contact communicates confidence and engagement. So, when speaking in a meeting, you want to sustain eye contact for at least two seconds with each person in the room, starting with whoever is senior to you. It says youre credible, youre worthy of their attention and sincere with what youre saying, says Price. The problem is when eye contact is shorter- or longer- than that. In high-stakes or high-stress moments, the majority of us eye-dart instead, trying to find solace in the ceiling or floor. That shows weakness. More than five seconds, on t he other hand, turns into intimidation or intimacy- neither of which is appropriate in a business setting.? Make Low and Broad Gestures Do you suffer from Velcro arms? Thats what Price calls it when your upper arms are attached to your torso, making you seem smaller and more closed off. Women will have their gestures originate from their elbows, so only their forearms move and not their entire arms, says Price. Mens gestures, on the other hand, are more likely to originate from their shoulders, creating low, broad movements that are more demonstrative and confident looking. The opportunity to use your hands in a discussion broadens the physical presence and power presence for women, Sorensen agrees. So start creating more space for yourself. If youre standing and have your hands together at your waist, try having your elbows out a bit so that they create space. If youre sitting in a meeting, try putting your elbows on the table and putting your hands together so that youre makin g a mountain. Also, avoid clenching your hands. It communicates nerves and tension. Stand and Walk Like a Leader Posture connotes leadership, says Price. How you stand and how you enter a room are both very important. And similar to how women make themselves smaller with their gestures, they do so with their stances as well, by crossing one leg over the other. Women are also more likely to put more weight on one foot than the other, causing them to shift their hips and appear imbalanced. Instead, stand with your weight evenly distributed on each foot. Youll look anchored, stable, in charge, and in control. Similarly, when seated in a meeting, you want your shoulder blades touching the back of the chair, your arms evenly balanced on both seat handles, and, ideally, both feet touching the ground. When you want to make a statement, however, thats when you lean in- literally. Stop Questioning Yourself Your tone, or how you sound when youre speaking, is responsible for nearly 40 percentof your words impact, according to research from UCLA. And with tone, there are more gender differences than any other type of nonverbal communication, says Price. Her top three for women upspeak (or uptalk), speed talking, and hedging. Upspeak is the rising intonation at the end of a statement that makes it sound like a question, which makes you sound unsure of what youre saying.Talk too fast, and your listener cant understand you. About 150 words per minute is the optimal speed.Hedging involves ending your statements with qualifiers and questions Dont you think? Right? Record yourself and listen back to see if you have a habit of doing any of the above, or ask friends to do buddy checks. Also, make sure youre loud enough to be heard. Often women are spoken over in meetings, and it can be due to their volume, says Sorensen. Initiate the Handshake Every Time. Finally, heres one power move to add to your arsenal Always initiate the handshake. Make it firm, dry, and confi dent. And dont forget to make eye contact, too. With Kelly Hultgren

According to fashion trends, you should not bring one of these to the office

According to fashion trends, you should not bring one of these to the office According to fashion trends, you should not bring one of these to the office If you’re anything like me, then when you get ready for work in the morning you pack yourself like you are about to embark on a small journey.I literally like to be prepared for anything. What if I spill on myself or just feel like changing my shirt at the end of the day? What if I want to walk home which means I need comfortable footwear? What if a friend wants to get a drink and I need to make sure I look cuter than them? What if I want to stop to run some errands or buy groceries? Then I need a smaller tote bag to go in my bag? What if it starts to snow and you find yourself in an Alive-type situation or, you know, just need dry socks? And these are just on the days that I am not exercising after work which requires its own huge separate  bag.  In other words, I am a bag lady â€" and it seems to get worse every year.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! But according to one o f the major trends to come out of Paris Fashion Week this year, the days of the big bags are numbered. Welcome to the year of the micro purse. The talk of Fashion Week in February was not a dress or shoes this year, but a purse that fits into the palm of your hand from French label Jacquemus. It is called the Le Chiquito, and its measurements are 4 inches by 2 inches ( it  retails for $522.)Well, at least with this trend my back pain will decrease as this bag can only be hooked on one finger and can hold a mint or a piece of gum.Though it should be noted that the label also featured several oversized bags so perhaps the designers just wanted to experiment with sizes. However, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle have been leaning towards smaller bags. Plus  Virgil Abloh,  Hender Scheme, and Acne Studios are all also participating in this trend. Now, these bags are a bit of an exaggerated trend and will clearly only be worn by the very fashionable but perhaps it is a not-so-subtle Kondofie d response to our world of having too much stuff and needing giant bags to carry all our stuff around.Maybe you should only carry around things that spark joy and if they don’t fit in a micro purse then maybe you really need to rethink your packing strategy. Perhaps all you need is a small stick of gum to spark joy. Yes, your metro card makes your commute possible, but does it make you happy? It is a personal goal of mine to carry less than Mary Poppins did in that carpet bag of hers so perhaps a micro bag is the way to go.You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

3 Ways to Increase Your Chances of Getting a Raise for 2019

3 Ways to Increase Your Chances of Getting a Raise for 2019 3 Ways to Increase Your Chances of Getting a Raise for 2019 We all want to make more money at work , and the start of a new year often coincides with a boost in income. That said,   raises  are by no means guaranteed, and just because your friends and peers might be getting an increase doesn’t mean you should automatically expect the same. If you   really  want to score a raise for 2019, here are some steps you should take. You might think that asking for a raise would lower your chances of getting one, since you’ll risk coming off as too bold or greedy. But actually, 70 percent of workers who request more money are successful to some degree. Just as importantly, 39 percent of those who ask for raises get the exact boost they’re looking for, which is why it pays to not just state that you’d like more money, but rather, give your boss a hard figure to work with. That said, you don’t want to put off the raise discussion much longer, because the closer you get to the end of the year, the more likely it’ll be that your company will have mapped out its 2019 budget. And if there’s no room in that budget for the number you’re asking for, you might get   denied  on the basis of bad timing. Maybe you have an idea of what most people in your industry make. But wouldn’t it be better to have precise figures? The more salary data you dig up and present to your manager when asking for a raise, the stronger a case you’ll ultimately build. There are dozens of sites you can use to access this information, such as Glassdoor, which has a   Know Your Worth tool  that lets you research salary data by industry, job title, geographic location & more. That last point is important, because while sites like the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics might give you salary averages on a national level, it pays to get more granular when making the case for a raise. After all, if you live in New York City and have the same job title as someone in rural Georgia, your salary should be higher by virtue of the higher cost of living you’re exposed to. Therefore, be sure to find research that accounts for geographic differences when making your case. Just because the average person in your area with your job description makes $60,000 doesn’t mean   you   deserve to be earning that much. If you really want to sway your boss to give you a boost, earn it. Take a class to improve your skills, volunteer for a new project that no one else seems to want to own or push yourself to finish up a major task you know your manager has been waiting on. It’s one thing to tell your boss you’ll do an even better job in 2019, but it’s another thing to take steps   today  to prove that you’ll be able to make good on that promise. A raise won’t necessarily just land in your lap. If you want your earnings to increase in the new year, you’ll need to be proactive in making that happen - even if it means working harder and stepping outside of your comfort zone. 6 Reasons Why You Need to Have Several Resume Versions

6 Reasons Why You Need to Have Several Resume Versions 6 Reasons Why You Need to Have Several Resume Versions When you’re job hunting, you might think having one resume can do the trick to help you land a job. Think again. There are many cases in which having multiple versions of your resume can help you get your foot in the door faster. For the greatest impact, tailor each resume for every job application. Here are six scenarios in which having various resume versions can help you land a job: 1. Same Industry, New Position If you’ve worked as a high school science teacher for years but are looking to teach the Scientific Method to elementary school kids, you’ll need to  revamp your resume. While you can highlight your overall successes as a teacher, you’ll need to illustrate why you’d be the best candidate to teach to a whole new demographic. 2. Same Industry, Various Positions Let’s face it. When you’ve been job searching for a while, you can start to get desperate. That desperation can cause you to apply for any old job in your industry, regardless of experience. Having a resume that caters to various jobs within your industry not only shows your versatility, but also makes you a more competent candidate than you would be if you sent out a resume that wasn’t really a match. Make sure to highlight your experience, but don’t skimp on your skills that are transferable in the industry. 3. Same Industry, Telecommuting Position You love your career as a writer. But frankly, you’re tired of schlepping into the office, day in and day out. You want to continue in your career, but from the comfort of your home office. Redesign your resume  to illustrate any previous work-at-home experience and spotlight the work-at-home traits you already possess to make your telecommuting transition seamless. 4. Completely New Career Field Sure, in your previous position you were your company’s marketing maven, but that isn’t going to transfer when you’re applying to become a new organization’s social media manager. Spotlight the specific skills and work experiences that make you a fit for the new job. Then, build new skills and experience by volunteering, interning, freelancing, or taking on a part-time role. 5. New Industry, Same Position Even if you worked as an accountant in a law firm, it might not be the same as working as an accountant for a theatrical company. It’s up to you to show how your solid experience in your career can seamlessly cross over to a new industry. 6. New Industry, New Position You’re consumed with making cute cookies. The thing is, you’ve been a bookkeeper since, well, forever. When you’re applying for a completely different position in a brand-new field, previous work experience doesn’t count. But passion sure does. Emphasize all your post-5:00 p.m.  endeavors working and studying in the field you truly love and make that the  focus of your resume. Job seekers have to be creative when looking for a job. Depending on what type of job you’re looking for, customizing your resume to shine a light on the strengths you already possess will  make you the perfect candidate for the position. Don’t forget to  utilize your cover letter  as well! Your cover letter will be a great introduction into the changes you are making in your career, as well as a place to explain why you will be a good fit for the role. Interested in finding a new position? You can get started by browsing telecommuting, part-time, and flexible positions in 55 categories.   Readers, do you have different resume versions? If so, how many? Let us know in the comments section below! Jessica Howington contributed to this post.

Employees Found to Expect Flexible Scheduling but Doubt its Value

Employees Found to Expect Flexible Scheduling but Doubt its Value Employees Found to Expect Flexible Scheduling but Doubt its Value Employees were found to believe that the prime motivator for the shift was based in business concerns rather than benefiting employees. Over half of respondents said the most common reason for the popularity of flexible work scheduling was efficiency and productivity while 12 percent said greater flexibility was a result of a desire to help employees better manage their workload and hours worked. This perception appears to have greatly contributed to employees ranking flexible working as on the sixth most important benefit offered to employees. Respondents ranked several business benefits based on importance: 25 days of vacation (40 percent); Company pension plan (29 percent); Annual bonus plan (24 percent); Smartphones (18 percent); Insurance (16 percent); and Flexible working hours (12 percent). A gender divide was identified that showed women were more likely than men to believe flexible working schedules was a vital business benefit, measured at 16 percent and 9 percent, respectively. Stephen Menko, Director of Ortus UK said, “These findings suggest HR professionals have their work cut out for them in convincing staff of the relative merits of flexible working. The business case is obvious as it allows for efficiency savings on office costs and greater output. However, the benefit to the individual of a better work-life balance and less time and money spent commuting are, perhaps surprisingly, ranked low, and maybe HR needs to convey this cost-effective benefit in a more compelling way. Widespread flexible working could be a seismic shift in the way work is conducted and it is that rare beast a change that benefits everyone. Staff [members] just need to be convinced of this point, or at least have it raised on their radar as a benefit they can request.
